Personally my favorite time of the year is when the world wakes up to a time of change from the dreary weather. The air feels warmer, the plants are budding and preparing for bloom, the sun kisses your skin. I feel like my body is coming back to life. I also begin to crave the beach every single day. Some weeks it can be manageable, that’s the beauty of homeschooling. I haven’t been attending to my blog the past month because baseball has consumed our lives preparing for the season. Even through the chaos I find so much to love. I am very proud about how much my boys have developed already this season. Not only have they solidified skills on the field, their overall confidence to be themselves is heart warming. We are in the home stretch of second grade for my oldest. For him, this means he is preparing to take his end of the year assessment to be sure we are on the right track in all subjects. For my youngest, well this is his last “school” year of freedom. He will be a big Kindergarten boy this fall, and this Mama is having a hard time. When I began this journey I was very hard on myself and doubted that I wouldn’t be able to teach certain things and would potentially need some outsource form of education. My mindset now is the complete opposite. I am confident in my ability to give my children everything they need to be just as smart and skilled as any other child. You do not need fancy books or all the resources possible when you begin. Your skills and tools build over time and you learn the best way your child retains information. The last thing you want is to be spending money on items or books you’re never going to use. I made trips to the dollar tree and store for a few stationary items. The dollar tree specifically has a wide selection of manipulative, I was impressed. Walmart or any bookstore will carry phonics type workbooks from pre-k to high school and they are very inexpensive. That is all you need. I was intimidated having the responsibility of teaching my child how to read. Now I can sit back and be a proud Mom to a child in second grade who is reading at a third grade level!! I thank God everyday for leading us on this path and for husband willing to give me the freedom to be able to do so. I know it’s harder for him on the days he is very tired and wishes he could be home with us. My next project will be making tutorial videos on sourdough everything. I have hid my starter, “Syrus” in the back of the fridge for too long. Be sure to check in again soon to see what recipes I stumble into.
